Nordic Sauna
Sauna’s Rich History
“All humans are equal, but nowhere more so than in a sauna.”
—Finnish Proverb
The sauna is a sacred meeting place of the elements—earth, air, fire, and water. Within this warm and quiet container, we arrive just as we are. We come to wash, to rest, to restore our health, and to receive healing. We come to reconnect with ourselves, with our community, and with the living world around us.
For thousands of years across Northern Europe, sauna bathing has been a cherished ritual of purification, prayer, and renewal. It was a place where the body was cared for throughout every stage of life and where the rhythms of nature were honored with deep respect. In recognition of its cultural significance, Finland’s sauna culture was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020.
This offering invites you to experience sauna not simply as heat therapy, but as an ancestral practice of connection, ritual, and care—woven with traditions of Nordic folk medicine and seasonal celebration.
A time to slow down.
A time to cleanse and restore.
A time to remember.
Pure magic.
The Nordic Sauna Process
A traditional Nordic sauna follows a rhythmic cycle of heat, cold, and rest. Typically, this includes about 15 minutes in the hot sauna (160–200°F) followed by a cold plunge or cool water dousing. This cycle is repeated two to three times, depending on individual comfort and tolerance. The full experience generally takes about 90 minutes.
During the sauna session, water is ladled onto the hot stones to create a soft, enveloping steam known in Finnish as löyly. Traditionally, löyly is considered the spirit or life force of the sauna itself. The quality of the löyly—its warmth, softness, and humidity—greatly shapes the overall sauna experience.
A vihta or vasta (a traditional sauna whisk or broom made from bundles of birch, oak, linden, or eucalyptus branches) may be used to gently brush or tap the body. This practice stimulates circulation, supports lymphatic flow, and has long been associated with cleansing, protection, and purification.
Sauna bathing remains a deeply woven part of everyday Nordic life.
Fun fact: Finland is home to more saunas than cars.
Health Benefits
Regular sauna bathing—especially when combined with traditional hot and cold contrast therapy—offers a wide range of supportive benefits for the body and mind.
Improved Circulation
Sauna heat encourages blood vessels to gently expand, increasing circulation and oxygen flow throughout the body. The cold plunge that follows helps stimulate circulation by contracting the blood vessels and moving blood back toward vital organs.
Muscle Recovery & Pain Relief
Alternating between heat and cold (known as contrast therapy) may help reduce muscle soreness, ease tension, and support recovery after physical activity.
Immune System Support
The deep sweating that occurs during sauna bathing may help stimulate the immune system and support the body’s natural detoxification processes.
Heart & Cardiovascular Health
Regular sauna use can support healthy circulation and may contribute to improved cardiovascular function and lower blood pressure.
Reduced Inflammation & Swelling
The hot–cold cycle may help reduce inflammation while supporting lymphatic flow and fluid movement in the body.
Stress Relief & Improved Mood
The soothing heat of the sauna helps relax the nervous system, reduce stress, and promote a sense of calm and well-being.
Endurance & Physical Resilience
Regular sauna bathing has been associated with improved endurance and the body’s ability to adapt to physical stress.
Brain Health
Research suggests that frequent sauna bathing may be associated with a reduced risk of neurodegenerative conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Beyond the many physical benefits, sauna offers something even deeper—a chance to slow down, reconnect with your body, and participate in a tradition of care that has supported human well-being for thousands of years.

Finnish people pronounce "sauna" as [ˈsɑu̯nɑ], which sounds like "sow-nah," with the "au" sound similar to the "ow" in "cow" or "how". The word is pronounced with the same emphasis on the "a" and "u" as it is in English, and each letter is sounded out in Finnish.
